medaia GmbH is an Austrian start-up focused on developing AI-based, clinically validated digital products for healthcare. Their SkinScreener app leverages artificial intelligence to assess skin cancer risks, providing users with accurate results. The company’s goal is to make advanced healthcare accessible, ensuring users can easily perform self-checks for skin issues with the same confidence as a traditional doctor’s visit.

The brief.

After the first versions of the SkinScreener app focused mainly on optimising the AI technology and its accuracy in detecting and classifying skin spots, our task was to help bring the user experience to the same level. The app needed to explain its AI-generated risk assessments more clearly to users, build confidence in its technology, and encourage regular use. Additionally, medaia wanted to emphasise data security and privacy, ensuring that users understood the safety of their information. Our task was to redesign the app’s UX and UI to improve usability, make the technology more accessible, and build a reliable, transparent user experience while integrating feedback mechanisms.

The solution.

We worked closely with medaia to re-envision the app, addressing user concerns about AI by designing a more intuitive interface that explained the process behind the assessments. We introduced onboarding screens to build trust and transparency, including detailed explanations about data privacy and the science behind the app. We also included an additional option to request an assessment from an e-Doctor. The redesign featured a modern, professional look, improving usability and accessibility. Additional features like scan reminders, a body map for tracking skin spots, and a feedback system were integrated to encourage routine use. UX writing sessions were conducted to create a caring, professional tone that anticipates users’ concerns and needs and seeks to raise their awareness of skin cancer.

The outcome.

Our redesign helped medaia significantly improve user trust and engagement with the SkinScreener app. The new UI and UX foster a more transparent, seamless user experience, while features like feedback options and scan reminders promote regular use. The app now communicates its value clearly, resulting in higher user satisfaction and trust.

Key Achievements:

  • Building trust in AI-powered assessments through clear onboarding.

  • Introducing a modern visual design to enhance usability.

  • Creating scan reminders and a body map for tracking spots.

  • Ensuring transparent communication on data privacy and security.
