The Austrian Energy Agency (Österreichische Energieagentur) is a non-profit organisation dedicated to accelerating the energy transition in Austria. They support businesses, municipalities, and individuals in implementing energy-efficient measures and promoting renewable energy sources. With around 100 experts, the agency provides information and consulting on all energy-related topics, fosters energy efficiency, facilitates networking and is active in research and development.

The brief.
In 2019 the Austrian Energy Agency launched the “Österreich radelt” (ÖR) initiative to promote cycling as a sustainable and healthy mode of transportation. Despite the initial success, the app required modernisation to keep up with technological advancements and user expectations. The goals were to technically overhaul the app, enhance user experience, increase active user numbers, and promote cycling as a viable transportation alternative. The project faced challenges such as integrating modern features, ensuring a modern and seamless user experience, and coordinating feedback from various stakeholders.

The solution.
To address the challenges “Österreich radelt” was facing, we undertook a comprehensive redesign and development process using Flutter, aiming to modernise the app, improve the user experience, and add advanced features to encourage cycling. Through an iterative, feedback-driven process, we developed a new information architecture, creating a streamlined, user-friendly interface that increased engagement and promoted community building. Our key enhancements include a modern UI, improved GPS tracking, gamification elements (such as challenges, contests, badges, and leaderboards), community features and personalised recommendations. Our agile approach allowed continuous improvements, ensuring the app aligned with client expectations and user needs.

The outcome.
The new “Österreich radelt” app was relaunched with significant improvements:
Increased user numbers and active usage shortly after the relaunch.
Positive feedback from users regarding the enhanced user experience and new features.
Strengthened market position and expanded reach, including use in South Tyrol and Liechtenstein.
Contribution to sustainable mobility and environmental protection by encouraging more people to cycle.
The “Österreich radelt” app aims to further transform cycling in Austria by adding health tracking, social media integration, and enhanced data analytics. Future plans also include collaborating with local governments to improve cycling infrastructure and safety, making the app a key player in sustainable transportation.
